Ciutadella is on of the cities with more history at Menorca. Next to the center of the village had been found prehistoric populated sites.(talayotic culture) from Menorca, and a phoenicians ruins. Then Ciutadella as Menorca and Iberic peninsula,Romans from I century to II century, who founded Ciutadella (Iamo), the barbarians, Byzantines (534), up to the Islamic rule. between IX and XI centuries, who disegned the present Ciutadella streets layout, width the Main Mosque placed where the Cathedral is. Menorca was Conquered by King Alfonso III (1287) and subsequently repopulated by north catalonian people.

The Ciutadella old town was protected by a wall up to the XIX century. This wall was build by romans and arabies, after, it was fortified by the catalonian conquerors and partial destroyed by the Turkish siege at 1558. Then it was rebuilded during the XVII century. Nowdays there are still two towers preserved: "es bastió de sa Font" and Governor Tower located behind the Town hall. XVII and XVII centuries contributed the most important Ciutadella arquitecture, with beautiful palaces and churches.

Surrounded by the Contramurada Avenue, placed where the old wall was, the old town is drown by medieval and arabic small streets and lanes. Is in this area where we can found the most important monuments.The old town is mainly pedestrian and offers to the visitor a perfect place for a walk and shopping.
